Pophams
Saturday morning, 11.30am. Queue already long enough that it’s hitting the kerb.
Pophams is in full swing with all their table full or filling both inside and out.
Purchases; a croissant, pain au chocolat, cardamom “cardi” bun, and one of their weekend specials, an almond croissant. Total spend, £17.20…yikes.
With other errands to run, I took them to go and they survived several buses and a trip to the supermarket before reaching home a few hours later.
On first inspection, two things were evident - first, save for the cardamom bun, the pastries were large. Large enough in fact to be shared. Second, they appeared somewhat overcooked.
Overall, Pophams pastries are average at best.
They may be better fresh and warm but cooled down and eaten later they are on the dry side and the flavour is nothing particularly memorable.
I have a fondness for cardamom buns after my travels to Finland and Estonia. Honestly, the most memorable and finest cardamom buns I’ve ever had where I savoured every bite, even taking small bites so as to make the experience last longer. One of the best ones even being from the ferry terminal. The cardi bun from Pophams doesn’t even come close to the majesty of them.
Memorable for all the wrong reasons. Oh well.
